Most people would lose their appetite at the sight of a slaughterhouse that has sat empty for years. So how did we succeed in turning it into a shopper’s paradise for sustainable shoppers?

For years, a butcher’s shop with an adjacent slaughterhouse stood empty in Tägerwilen (TG). Of all things, an organic supermarket, Kilo + Gramm, wanted to move into the premises. But to be able to do that, the derelict and moribund atmosphere had to give way to an ambiance full of freshness and a sense of well-being.
Light for Guiding Shoppers
People entering the shop are guided through the establishment so that they get to discover as many products as possible – without the use of any signposts. Instead, we work with light: pleasant lighting in the shop window attracts people even before they have entered, the use of accent lighting makes highlights like the fresh meat counter stand out.
Hygiene Challenge
To emphasize the ecological and regional products, we worked a great deal with natural materials. Not easy – especially when strict regulations apply to bricks, for example. But, by using them spar-ingly, we created a natural and yet nevertheless pristine environment.
